'Dial-a-doper' avoids jail for deals with cop
By: Daryl Slade, Calgary Herald (CN AB), 10-29-05
A man who was convicted of selling cocaine to an undercover city police officer on three separate occasions and possession of the same drug for the purpose of trafficking will not go to jail.
Sukhdev Singh Kamoh, who pleaded guilty to all four charges and has a prior conviction in 2001 for possessing marijuana for the purpose of trafficking, was sentenced last week by provincial court Judge Anne Brown to two years less a day to be served in the community.
It is the second time Kamoh, 23, categorized as a "dial-a-doper" on the low end of the scale in trafficking, has been given a conditional jail sentence for similar drug charges. In 2001, he was given a 45-day sentence for the marijuana conviction.
Brown said in her written judgment that drug trafficking is one of the most serious offences in the criminal law, carrying a maximum penalty of life imprisonment, and that commercial trafficking in cocaine is one of the most serious forms of drug trafficking.
However, the judge noted because of Kamoh's remorse and rehabilitation since the offence, confirmed by his parents and girlfriend, she was satisfied the objective of specific deterrence does not have to be addressed by the sentence she was imposing.
