Not long ago, smoking marijuana in front of police headquarters would have been considered an act of extreme stupidity that would have swiftly landed you in a conveniently close holding cell. But when it happened on Thursday, no one was arrested, and according to the man who organized the brazen move, there was a message behind the red-eyed madness.

"Every bit of legislation proposed by the federal government is a re-criminalization," stated Marc Emery who runs the B.C. Marijuana Party and once ran for mayor in Vancouver. "You must oppose it when Parliament reconvenes this fall. There will be pressure from the troglodytes and dinosaurs in all the parties to make the law punitive again so that we go to jail."

Emery handed out joints to a few dozen followers and they all lit up at once in an effort to draw attention to an Ontario Court of Appeal decision this month. The court decided not to overturn a lower court decision that cleared a teenager of marijuana possession charges.

Police forces in Ontario have said they will not lay charges for possession of under 30 grams until the laws are clarified and Toronto Police took no notice of > those who smoked joints outside their headquarters.
