Small amount of dope leads to small sentence
Source: Kamloops Daily News (CN BC), 12-24-09

A man busted with 15 grams of dope won't have a criminal record so long as he behaves himself and does 15 hours of community service work.

Justin Sommerfeldt, 28, pleaded guilty to possession of the drug. He was given a conditional discharge with six months probation.

Sommerfeldt was charged after an Alberta Mountie stopped him June 3 as he drove to Saskatchewan. The officer spotted Sommerfeldt's passenger not wearing her seatbelt.

When he stopped them, the officer thought Sommerfeldt seemed nervous, federal Crown prosecutor Anthony Varesi told the court.

The officer also smelled marijuana. He arrested both occupants for possession of a controlled substance and searched the vehicle.

Sommerfeldt admitted the 15 grams of marijuana — about $150 worth — belonged to him.

Provincial court judge Chris Cleaveley told the man it would be a good idea to stay away from marijuana.

"Most definitely," said Sommerfeldt.
