Bloc Pot confident followers can only grow

By: James Mennie, Montreal Gazette, 03/20/03

Hugo Saint-Onge seems to have all the right moves for a new candidate in the provincial election.

He's running in the north-end riding of Gouin and thinks his potential constituents deserve to have their voices heard in Quebec City. He feels it's time someone spoke up about condo conversions in the area and made sure the interests of minorities are protected.

Oh yes, and, if elected on April 14, he'll open up a coffee shop and sell his customers marijuana.

"It's what they call a canni-bistro in France" he told reporters yesterday, adding that everyone will be welcome.

Saint-Onge is the leader of the Bloc Pot, a political entity that wants to legalize marijuana and is prepared to test its philosophy at the polls.

The Bloc is fielding 80 candidates so far and hopes to have a full slate of 125 in time for voting day.

Whatever their chances at the polls, the Bloc Pot has by far the best election slogan of the campaign:

"Le 14 avril, on va les planter!"

(On April 14, we'll plant them!)
