Toronto woman first person to be charged under new drug-impaired driving law

TORONTO -A 27-year-old woman has become the first person in the country to be arrested under a new federal law that cracks down on drivers who get behind the wheel while high on drugs, according to police.

Toronto police made the arrest in the city's downtown core on Wednesday after being called about a separate collision. While in the area, a second collision occurred when an impaired woman in a passing vehicle struck a parked car, a police news release said yesterday.

The legislation allows police officers to force motorists to perform roadside tests such as walking a straight line if they are suspected of being impaired by drugs. If the drivers fail, they will be sent to a police station and ordered to surrender urine, blood or saliva samples or be subject to a minimum $1,000 fine.
