Halifax - The founder of Nova Scotia's Marijuana Party is appealing a $258,427
fine imposed on him last month after being sentenced for possessing proceeds
of crime.
In a one-page appeal notice filed Monday, Michael Patriquen asks for the fine to be reduced calling the amount "excessive."
During a sentencing hearing on Jan. 14, Justice Peter Richard agreed to give Patriquen two years to pay the fine and also imposed a three-year sentence retroactive to time already served.
Patriquen is currently on parole after serving time on drug conspiracy charges. While in jail, Patriquen tried to convince authorities he needed to smoke pot to ease the pain caused by a damaged nerve in his neck from a 1999 car accident. Patriquen has a federal licence to grow and possess pot for medicinal use.
