OTTAWA -- The leader of the federal Green party, unveiling an election platform that includes a proposal to legalize marijuana, apologized yesterday for not having smoked pot.

"I am not a fan of marijuana use. I have to confess this -- I know all politicians are asked. I've never used marijuana. I apologize," Elizabeth May said.

The Greens' platform proposes to allow the sale of marijuana to adults through licensed distribution outlets, generating about $1 billion annually in taxes.

May will tour B.C. this weekend with a rally stop in Port Alberni to support one of the party's star candidates, labour critic John Fryer, running in Nanaimo-Alberni.

May is to attend a rally at Victoria Quay in Port Alberni at 1 p.m. Friday and continue on to Hupacasath House of Gathering for an event.

She will also speak about the Green Party's "Vision Green" policies on the need for less reliance on raw log exports and the party's support for the Island Rail Corridor plan, among other things.
